More celebrations

Jonkonnu is also called Junkanoo and John Canoe. Unofficial, community-based Jonkonnu celebrations are found in Jamaica, St. Kitts-Nevis and Turks and Caicos. Below, some places with official festivities:

Bahamas, www.bahamastourism.com. There are festivities on Boxing Day (Dec. 26) and New Year’s Day, beginning at 2 a.m. The largest procession is on Bay Street in Nassau, where teams “rush” and compete with a common theme. (Jonkonnu is also called Goombay here.)

Bermuda Gombeys,www.bermudatourism.com. On Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, cricket matches and other official occasions.

New Bern, N.C., at Tryon Palace; www.tryonpalace.org. A Jonkonnu performance is part of its annual Christmas Candlelight event.
