San Francisco: Snag a $129 room at the Crescent

Fall and winter are quiet seasons good for quick getaways in California. The Crescent San Francisco near Union Square has a good deal on rooms -- starting at $129 a night -- for shoppers, sightseers or anyone seeking a stylish break.

The deal: The hotel is at 417 Stockton St., in an older building a few blocks from Union Square. It provides a good central location, particularly if you are car-less in the city. Continental breakfast and free Wi-Fi come with the rooms too.

When: The offer is good through Dec. 31, though blackout dates apply.

Tested: I found availability for what the hotel calls junior rooms (one double bed) for $129 and doubles (queen-sized bed) for $149 on Nov. 13 and 14 as well as Nov. 27 and 28, for those who may want to go holiday shopping on Thanksgiving weekend. (Prices don’t include tax.) Best available rates without the deal run from $179-$199 plus tax.
