Staying at a hotel in San Francisco’s Union Square is supremely compatible with going car-free. The Larkspur Hotel Union Square is half a block from the Powell Street Cable Car, six blocks from Chinatown and about a mile from North Beach -- all pretty walkable. The hotel discounts rooms up to 25% for those who stay two nights this summer.

The deal: The Summer on Sale offer applies to three hotels owned by Larkspur Hotels -- the Union Square site at 524 Sutter St. as well as ones in the Northern California cities Roseville and Pleasanton. The Union Square deal requires a two-night stay; rooms come with free Wi-Fi and self-parking.

When: The offer is good through July 31 for stays until Sept. 30, based on availability.

Tested: I checked availability for Aug. 5-7 and found a room with a double bed for $190 and a queen bed for $198. The best available rate for the same rooms on the same nights would cost $254 and $265 respectively, excluding tax.
