Greece: Let the Ultimate Daycation begin

Special to the Los Angeles Times

Stillness is a powerful teacher.

I’m a bad student.

I just can’t seem to sit still. Travel, especially immersive experiences, is where I find much of the magic of this world.

Today latimes.com/travel and I begin a video series called “Ultimate Daycation.” In it, I take viewers on a whirlwind tour of the Greek island of Mykonos, a beautiful, charming place with plenty of nightlife (besides the day life). I spend 24 hours experiencing everything under the scorching Greek sun. OK, maybe not everything, but lots.

You can see the introduction to this adventure above, and the first episode in the video player below the Travel Blog. It will run Wednesdays and Fridays for the next 10 weeks. Will I crash and burn? Watch and find out.

My rules for the “Ultimate Daycation” were simple: My adventure began with the sunrise, and it ended with the next sunrise. The magic happened in between. The connections. The escapades. The spontaneous friendships. The drag queen shows. The Greek dancing. The sleep deprivation. The nude beaches. It’s all there. The good. The bad and the nearly naughty.

The 20 episodes will take you on a journey into the heart and soul of island life. I managed to cram a two-week vacation into one very full day. I met the locals. I met the tourists. I even met the ill-tempered mascot of Mykonos: Petros the pelican.

Ultimate Daycation is all about the joys of travel and living fully. Come along with me. You may not be able to join me on this adventure, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take a little mental vacation by watching the videos. And maybe, just maybe, they’ll inspire your next vacation, wherever it may be.
