Queen Elizabeth super-sized in giant photo overlooking Thames

For the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this year, tributes don’t get bigger than this -- at least not yet.

An enormous photograph of Queen Elizabeth II and the royal family, measuring 328 feet wide and 229 feet tall, was installed Friday along the Thames River near Blackfriars Bridge. It took a team of eight workers to put it up.

In the photo, the queen seems to be waving to all who pass -- an image perfect for the moment the Jubilee Flotilla will sail by on Sunday, June 3. It’s all part of the celebrations marking the queen’s 60th year on the throne.

The photograph was snapped during the queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. From left are Princes Charles Edward and Andrew, the late Lord Mountbatten, the queen and Prince Philip, and Capt. Mark Phillips and Princess Anne (from whom she divorced).

And really, it’s a bit of a coverup. The huge canvas photo hides the redo of a 1970s-era building called Sea Containers that will be transformed into Europe’s first Mondrian hotel, according to a release from the building’s management company. The hotel will have 360 rooms, more than half of which will face the river, and is expected to be done by the end of 2013.

And the photograph? It will be in place only until the end of June.
