Free admission for kids this month at San Diego Zoo, Safari Park
It’s good to be a kid this month at the San Diego Zoo and the zoo’s Safari Park. Children skip the $32 entrance fee at both venues and can take advantage of free activities inside, such as mingling with zoo characters, feeding a giraffe or taking in a Camp Critters Show.
The deal: The zoo has been offering Kids Free in October for more than 25 years, for children 11 and younger. No need to show a ticket (usually $32), and there’s no limit on the number of children you can bring, though they must be accompanied by an adult ($42).
For $10 a child, you can upgrade the freebie to include unlimited rides on guided bus tours, express buses and the aerial tram, which is convenient if you have little ones who may tire of walking.
When: The offer is good through Oct. 31.
Details: I like this freebie because there are lots of kid activities you can add to make a visit even more special. Zookeeper talks on insects, elephants, crocodiles and other animals; activity booths where children can color, make crafts and learn about animal behavior; and animal shows are among the activities offered at the zoo (2920 Zoo Drive, Balboa Park, San Diego).
At the Safari Park (15500 San Pasqual Valey Road, Escondido), kids can listen to storybook readings at Tiger Tales and watch the daily cheetah run to see how fast those animals go. (The website posts a schedule of activities so you can plan your day at each site.)
