Amtrak’s weekly SmartFares offer 25% discount on tickets

Every Tuesday, Amtrak rolls out SmartFares on selected routes and dates that offer a 25% savings on train tickets. Destinations and routes change weekly, and discounted prices are good for trips starting the following week.

The deal: The discount applies to coach seats only for travel every day except Fridays and Sundays. The booking dates available for sale tickets vary by route, and sometimes SmartFares sell out. The window for travel lasts about three weeks.

When: Sale tickets must be purchased Tuesdays-Fridays for future travel.

Tested: I checked this week’s sales and found availability for a one-way trip Nov. 8 on the Coach Starlight from L.A.’s Union Station to Oakland (Jack London Square) for $42. Usual price without the SmartFares discount is $56. Another example: Seattle to Vancouver, Canada, for $29.25 one way, instead of $39.
