Mexico: AeroMexico to fly new route from LAX to La Paz

It will be easier to get from Los Angeles to La Paz, Mexico, after June 20, when AeroMexico launches a new route.

The twice-weekly flights will allow passengers to leave LAX at 2:20 p.m. Thursdays and return about noon on Sundays. Or fly south to La Paz on Sundays and return on Thursdays.

When I tried to book the round-trip flight for June 27-30, the cost was $267.44 per person, including taxes and fees.

The new flights are considered a boon for La Paz, the capital of Baja Sur, and come on the heels of more good news for the city, an improvement in highway access to Cabo San Lucas and its airport. The four-lane Highway 1 reportedly has cut driving time from Cabo to La Paz to 90 minutes.

“We are excited to now make the city of La Paz more accessible for Los Angeles residents,” said Agustín Olachea, president of the La Paz Tourism Board.

“The introduction of direct flights from LAX and new hospitality offerings will open doors for visitors who have yet to experience La Paz, and make it even easier for returning travelers to access more than 400 years of history and the incredible marine life of the Sea of Cortez.”

Among the new hospitality offerings Olachea mentioned is Hyatt Place La Paz, which is expected to open in 2014 with 151 rooms adjacent to the 550-acre CostaBaja complex, a master-planned residential and recreational facility.

La Paz, near the southern end of the Baja peninsula, is known for its international fishing tournaments. Also popular: scuba diving, sailing and ecotourism trips to Sea of Cortez islands, including Isla Espiritu Santo, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Popular local beaches include Palmira, el Coromuel, del Tesoro, Balandra, Tecolote and el Coyote.
