Las Vegas: Penn & Teller celebrate two decades of entertaining
Known in equal parts for their illusions, gore and wit, Penn & Teller are celebrating their 20th anniversary of performing in Las Vegas with a six-year extension to their contract at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.
In a city where magicians come and go, Penn & Teller have demonstrated their staying power. After sold-out runs on Broadway, the demented duo arrived in Sin City in 1993.
“When we first moved to Vegas, our hoity-toity New York art and theater friends all screamed in horror,” Penn Jillette, the taller, more vocal of the two, was quoted as saying in a news release. “Now they are all regular Vegas visitors and headliners.”
The two have performed together since the late 1970s. Teller, who has changed his name to just “Teller,” seldom speaks during their live performances and regular TV appearances. Penn, on the other hand, never seems at a loss for words, as demonstrated during his stint on NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice” last year. He will return to the show during its next series premiering March 3.
Officials from Caesars Entertainment, Rio’s parent company, recently feted the pair with a 20th anniversary birthday cake and the announcement that their contract was being extended.
“I hate to hurt our next negotiations with Caesars Entertainment, but we have no plans to leave. We intend to die in office,” Jillette was quoted as saying in the release.
Penn & Teller perform at 9 p.m. Saturdays-Wednesdays. Ticket prices range from $75 to $104.50 and are available on their website or by calling (702) 777-7776.
