Las Vegas: Sommelier can slake your thirst for wine knowledge

Share

If you’re a wine dolt, help is at hand. Valentino Las Vegas, inside the Venetian resort, promises participants in its Sommelier for a Day program that they will leave much better informed about which wines go with which foods and why.

Gretchen Allen, the wine director at the restaurant (sister property to the Santa Monica’s Valentino) and a certified sommelier, is the tutor for the class. Her mission is to make wine and its pleasures accessible to all through one-on-one training sessions.

She shares the history of wine and discusses Valentino’s wine list, which has more than 2,400 selections. The various aspects of wine service are also explained.

After the tutelage, students can show off their new-found knowledge as they sample some of the restaurant’s elite wines, paired with food prepared by executive chef Luciano Pellegrini, a James Beard Award winner, who specializes in traditional and contemporary Italian cuisine.

The experience costs $250 a person. Reservations can be made by calling Allen at (702) 414-3000.
