Delta plans to add new destinations, expand service at LAX

Delta Air Lines wants to raise its profile in Los Angeles. The airline announced Thursday it would add year-round and seasonal destinations and expand existing service to other cities in the West and Mexico from Los Angeles International Airport.

The Atlanta-based airline will add five new destinations -- Nashville and Seattle on April 8, San Jose on July 1 and Spokane, Wash., on June 10 -- and three new seasonal destinations with daily flights to Boston starting June 10, four weekly flights to Alaska on June 21 and Saturday service to Bozeman, Mont., starting June 22.

Delta also will launch service to San Jose, Costa Rica, on July 1 and begin daily flights to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, on July 1 and add a Saturday flight to Guadalajara on July 6. Increased service to Oakland, Phoenix and Sacramento starts June 10, and the airline will increase the number of flights to New Orleans to three daily starting Sept. 4.

As of summer, the airline said it would be operating 118 peak-day departures (meaning high demand days) to 40 nonstop destinations from Los Angeles. Delta has agreements with Alaska Airlines and many international carriers, including Air France/KLM, Alitalia, Virgin Australia and others. It plans to add Virgin Atlantic Airways as a code-share partner this year too.

“Our new service, combined with our domestic and international partners, positions Delta to be Los Angeles’ preferred carrier,” Delta’s senior vice president of network planning Bob Cortelyou said in a statement about the expanded service.
