Mexico: Bing and the Duke’s Cabo San Lucas hangout

Celebrating your 50th? So is Hacienda Beach Club & Residences, a Cabo San Lucas landmark that once catered to Hollywood stars such as Bing Crosby, John Wayne and Desi Arnaz.

The Hacienda’s management is inviting others celebrating the half-century mark — whether it’s a 50th birthday or a 50th anniversary — to join in the party.

If you’re marking a 50th anniversary, you can get a complimentary two-night stay; those celebrating a 50th birthday can collect a 50% discount on every second night, plus a free 50-minute massage at the Hacienda Spa.

“The original Hacienda Hotel was such an iconic destination,” said Ricardo Ramirez, general manager of Hacienda Beach Club & Residences. “We wanted to honor its legacy by celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Hacienda Beach Club & Residences is the ideal place for families to celebrate a 50th.”

The new Hacienda, a $230-million beach club, doesn’t look anything like the old one. The way the story goes, 30 years ago developer Don Koll, with fishing pal John Wayne, landed his Cessna on the dusty landing strip adjacent to the hotel for a weekend of deep-sea fishing. He liked it so well that when it went on the market the Koll Co. purchased it.

The new 22-acre resort is on the site of the former Hacienda Hotel, which is still standing but no longer functions. The resort is on Medano Beach and includes a residential community and vacation rentals. Real estate prices start at $499,000 and vacation rental prices start at $550 per night.

The 50th promotion runs until Dec. 19; guests must show proof of their wedding in 1963. Birthday celebrants must show a photo ID and make the reservation within 50 days of the birthday.
