Daily Deal: Summer sale on rooms at Kona Kai Resort in San Diego

The Kona Kai Resort and Spa may sound as though it should be in the 50th state, but it’s really on Shelter Island, which the resort deems “San Diego’s Hawaiian Isle.” Technically, Shelter is not a true island because it remains connected to the mainland. Semantics aside, the resort puts you in the Point Loma neighborhood and on the waterfront.

The deal: Spring Into Summer takes 20% off best available rates and comes with some nice extras: a $25 credit each day, free parking (usually $15 a night) and a gift bag for kids, if they come along. When making a reservation online, go to the website’s “specials and packages” page and follow the link to the discounted rates.

When: The offer is good through Aug. 30, based on availability.

Tested: I found availability June 2 to 5 for a room with one king-size bed for $112 a night, $27 less than the best available rate. If you add two children to the reservation for the same dates, room rate goes up to $144 ($35 less than the best available rate) for a room with two queen-size beds and a marina view.

In my online test, I found the best Spring Into Summer prices on midweek dates, with some weekends in July already booked up (Saturday stays require a two-night minimum). The nice thing about the sale is that you can reserve and, as long as you cancel 48 hours in advance, you won’t face any charges. There’s also a free airport shuttle and free Wi-Fi too.
