Hawaii: Andaz resort opens in Maui

There’s a new entry in the ever-evolving hotel scene in Hawaii, and it has a desirable oceanfront location in posh south Maui.

The Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort & Spa becomes the 10th property to bear Hyatt’s intimate Andaz brand and the first at a resort destination.

After passing over an entry footbridge spanning an infinity pool, guests are invited to slip off their shoes and wiggle their toes in a sandpit that’s right in the lobby. Tablet-carrying hosts eliminate the need for the traditional check-in desk.

Lodging choices include 297 guest rooms and suites, including seven luxurious villas boasting two to four bedrooms each.

Freebies include Internet access, non-alcoholic beverages and locally sourced snacks.

Cultural activities such as coconut leaf weaving and lei marking are also offered.

“The most important characteristic of Andaz is to be deeply rooted in the local culture, infusing it throughout the guest experience,” Sara Kearney, a Hyatt Hotels & Resorts executive, said in a news release.

The community of Wailea is sometimes referred to as “the Beverly Hills of Maui,” with a variety of upscale shops and restaurants to choose from. Andaz Maui has its own casual eatery, Kaana Kitchen. A second restaurant, Morimoto Maui, operated by “Iron Chef” Masaharu Morimoto, is expected to open this month.
