San Diego Fleet Week welcomes sports car racers for the annual “race at the base” as well as those who love to gawk at cars or enjoy super truck events Saturday and Sunday. Children 12 and younger get free admission as do members of the military and their families.

The deal: The 16th annual Coronado Speed Festival is at the Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado. The event will feature a Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup race, car shows, a super truck event and a Navy open house. It costs $25 for adult tickets for single-day entry; $35 for two days.

Free entry goes to active duty military members, active reservists and their dependents with IDs. (Military members don’t need tickets but will need to go to a separate entrance.) All children who are 12 and younger also get in free.

When: The event runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Details: Check the race schedule for times of races, qualifying races and practices over the weekend. Production, formula and historic cars will be part of the race scene both days. Other events include:

--Bouncies and zip lines in a fun zone for children;
--Navy open house and tours of the aircraft carrier the USS Reagan;
--Car show with awards given each day; and
--The Military Pit Crew Challenge. The fast-change competition enlists young sailors and marines stationed on the base to re-create a pit stop for a stock car -- changing all the tires, fueling it, etc. -- for semifinal contests Saturday and finals Sunday.
