At least 12 dead in Baghdad suicide bombing, Iraqi officials say

Iraqi officials say a suicide attack in northern Baghdad has killed at least 12 people.

A police officer said the attacker set off his explosives-laden vest Monday morning among commuters in Baghdad’s bustling Adan Square. He said 25 others were wounded.

A medical official confirmed the casualty figures. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to brief the media.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack in a mainly Shiite area of the city. But it bore the hallmarks of the Islamic State extremist group, which controls large portions of Iraq and Syria and frequently launches attacks targeting Iraq’s majority Shiites.
