Separate problems spur GM recalls of Chevrolet Malibu sedans

General Motors Co. is recalling about 60,000 Chevrolet Malibu sedans sold over the last two years for two different problems.

The first recall involves about 15,000 of the 2013 Malibu for a wiring problem that has caused two fires, but no crashes or injuries.

Cars sold with the eight-way power front seat and passenger seat option have electric wires that can wear against the frame of the seats, GM said.

In some cases, the insulation of a circuit on the wiring harness may become worn through, creating a short circuit. This can result in an open circuit breaker, unintended movement of the seat, sparking, flickering lights, melted wiring, smoke or a fire in an unattended vehicle.

Dealers will inspect the wiring and make any needed repairs if they spot wear.

In the second problem, GM is recalling about 45,000 vehicles from the 2014 model year because the heating, ventilation and air conditioning, or HVAC, controls may not operate properly when the vehicle is turned on.

The system reverts to the setting selected when the vehicle was last driven. Unless that previous setting was in defrost mode, drivers won’t be able to defog their windows.

GM said it does not know of any crashes, injuries or complaints due to the condition.

Dealers will fix the issue by reprogramming the HVAC control module.
