NBC Cancels Heralded Comedy ‘Coupling’

NBC has pulled the plug on “Coupling,” a comedy launched with fanfare as part of its marquee Thursday lineup, a spokeswoman said.
After “Coupling” failed to perform in the ratings, the General Electric Co. unit benched it for this month’s “sweeps” ratings period. The show came in 48th for the week on its most recent outing, Oct. 23.
NBC had hoped the show, based on a British hit about characters in their 30s looking for love, would be popular enough to help ease the blow when its most popular comedy, “Friends,” retires at the end of the season.
