L.A. Philharmonic will spotlight dance in season opener
The Los Angeles Philharmonic will open its new season with a program that will focus on ballet and modern dance. The gala concert, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, is set for Sept. 27 at Walt Disney Concert Hall and is being organized in partnership with Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at the Music Center.
The concert will feature American Ballet Theatre’s Roberto Bolle and Veronika Part performing selections from “Swan Lake.” The evening also will include a new choreographed work by Barak Marshall set to John Adams’ “The Chairman Dances,” featuring members of the L.A. modern dance company BodyTraffic.
In addition, the orchestra will perform a suite from Leonard Bernstein’s “On the Town” featuring dancers from Broadway.
The orchestra’s annual season opener is often designed to be a crowd-pleaser. The evening will end in typically posh fashion with a post-concert dinner for donors, musicians and other notable guests. Ticket packages for the evening range in price from $2,500 to $15,000.
Previous opening night galas featured Herbie Hancock, Renee Fleming and Juan Diego Florez.
The 2012-13 season will begin with Dudamel conducting two concert series featuring Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” and the music of Beethoven, as well as four performances of Oliver Knussen’s new work “Where the Wild Things Are.”
