Oscar nominations: ‘Les Miserables’ scores eight nods

After it opened in New York in 1987, the Broadway production of “Les Miserables” garnered eight Tony Awards, including best new musical. Twenty-five years later, the movie version of the beloved epic has scooped a total of eight Academy Award nominations, including best picture.

The symmetry probably won’t be lost on British producer Cameron Mackintosh, who was the force behind the original stage production and is one of four producers on the movie.

This is Mackintosh’s first foray into motion pictures. He is one of the biggest stage producers in London, having backed “Cats,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Miss Saigon.”

The Oscar nominations on Thursday included a nod for the original songwriters of “Les Miserables,” Alain Boublil, Claude-Michael Schonberg and Herbert Kretzmer, who penned the new song “Suddenly.”

“Les Miserables” received nominations for picture, actor (Hugh Jackman), supporting actress (Anne Hathaway), production design, costumes, makeup and hairstyling, original song and sound mixing. Director Tom Hooper, who won an Oscar for “The King’s Speech” two years ago, failed to land a nomination this year.

This year’s Oscar nominations also included one for playwright Tony Kushner for his adapted screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln.” Kushner, who won a Pulitzer Prize for “Angels in America,” was nominated for an Oscar seven years ago for “Munich,” also directed by Spielberg.
