Royal baby incoming! Duchess Catherine is in labor, in hospital

The royal baby is on the way! Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in London on Monday morning in what palace officials said was the early stages of labor.

The announcement was made at 7:30 a.m. London time, but the duchess had been admitted to the hospital around 6 a.m., according to the Telegraph.

The former Kate Middleton and her husband, Prince William, both 31, traveled by car from Kensington Palace to the hospital, according to World Now, reporting from London. She’s in St. Mary’s private Lindo Wing, where Wills and younger brother Harry were born. Her husband was expected to be at her side for the delivery.

On Monday morning, police guards could be seen via live feed standing on either side of an exterior door to the wing.

The baby — be it a boy or a girl — will be third in line for the throne behind Prince Charles and Prince William. News of the birth will be a mix of old and new traditions: On the old side, a royal aide will come from the hospital with a signed bulletin on Buckingham Palace letterhead, and will hand that off to an official who will be driven to the Palace. There, the notice will be posted in front of the building on an easel where the public can view it.

On the new side, at the same time, the media will be notified of the baby’s gender, weight and time of birth, and word will go out via Twitter and Facebook as well. Fewer crowds on Twitter, right?

Either way, the queen will be told what’s up before the general public is in the know.

However the best part (in the Ministry’s opinion), the name, might not be known for a while. After all, it took a week to come up with “William.”
