Kristen Stewart could still reprise ‘Snow White’ role, studio says

While a recent cheating scandal involving Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson may be affecting their personal lives, it has yet to have any serious ramifications on the young “Twilight” stars’ careers.

As Pattinson hit the promotional trail this week to talk up his new collaboration with David Cronenberg, “Cosmopolis,” in which he stars as a paranoid billionaire, reports surfaced that Stewart had been dropped from a planned follow-up to her summer film “Snow White and the Huntsman.”

But the studio that released that film, Universal, insists that plans for a second movie centering on the Huntsman character played by Chris Hemsworth are proceeding and that Stewart’s Snow White could still be a character in that film, despite reports that suggested otherwise.

Photographs surfaced last month of Stewart apparently cheating on boyfriend Pattinson with “Huntsman’s” director, first-time feature filmmaker Rupert Sanders. Both Stewart and Sanders issued public apologies.

Universal has yet to select a writer or a director for the Huntsman-centered project, though Sanders remains on the list of possible director candidates.

Stewart did recently drop out of “Cali,” an upcoming film from Nick Cassavetes, though Pattinson actually landed a new gig on Tuesday -- Variety reported that he is attached to star opposite Naomi Watts in Werner Herzog’s “Queen of the Desert.”

Stewart has been a tabloid staple since the “Twilight” vampire film series skyrocketed her and Pattinson to fame in 2008. She’s long been followed by paparazzi and for years has taken pains to guard her private life — rarely even acknowledging her four-year relationship with Pattinson.

On the promotional trail for “Cosmopolis,” Pattinson has been suffering in the harsh glare of a media spotlight, though he has remained largely mum on the couple’s woes thus far. On an appearance on “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” Monday night, the comedian brought out ice cream and joked about Pattinson having some personal issues to gossip about.

On the red carpet for the New York premiere of the film Monday, director Cronenberg said of the young stars’ relationship scandal, “Honestly, that doesn’t touch me, and it doesn’t touch the movie. It’s really irrelevant. Not to [Rob] obviously, but to me and the movie. It doesn’t change the movie at all. That’s all media stuff.”

Based on Don DeLillo’s dialogue-heavy novella, “Cosmopolis” follows Pattinson’s Packer, a billionaire financier in New York who has his limo driver escort him to a barber across town, despite vague threats on Packer’s life and, possibly, the larger world.

“What I’d liked about the script originally was its lyricism,” Pattinson said at a press conference after the film’s debut screening at the Cannes Film Festival in May. “It’s like you’re doing songs instead of movies.”

What all of this means for the final film in the blockbuster “Twilight” series remains unclear. “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 2,” the last movie in the vampire romance series adapted from Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling young adult novels, is due in theaters Nov. 16.
