Grammys 2013: Frank Ocean’s mom is Twitter’s hero
Now that the Recording Academy has named its Grammy contenders for the 2013 awards ceremony, the artists’ extended families and management are weighing in on the winners and snubs.
By far the most heartwarming Grammy nominations hero is Frank Ocean’s mom, Kantonya Breaux Riley. She’s a regular presence on Twitter and followed by a few music-business vets. But watching her gratitude unfold in real time as her son locked down the major categories was enough to almost return some faith in the Grammys.
“In Nashville!! Being quite pampered :-)” she wrote as the day began. As Ocean started his sweep though, she grew more overwhelmed - “Best new record “Thinkin Bout You”!!!!!! So proud of my baby!!!” “Best new artist !! Oh my God! Thank you.“”Six Grammy nominations tonight! I’m still shaking. What can I say y’all?”
Seriously, all of you, go call your mom right now and thank her for everything. She deserves it.
Meanwhile, Justin Bieber’s posse didn’t have such a good run of it Wednesday night. Biebs was locked out of every major and minor category, and his manager, Scooter Braun, was quite nonplussed. “I just plain DISAGREE,” he write on Twitter. “The kid deserved it. Grammy board u blew it on this one.”
As he unpacked what happened, he suspected that Bieber’s acclaimed album “Believe” was something of a black swan in the minds of Grammy voters — adult enough to confuse his teenpop beginnings, but not enough to wipe them away and start anew.
He tweeted that “the hardest thing to do is transition, keep the train moving. The kid delivered. Huge successful album, sold out tour, and won people over...this time he deserved to be recognized and I dont really have any kind nice positive things to say about a decision i dont agree with.”
Braun’s stable wasn’t entirely locked out — Carly Rae Jepsen got a nod for song of the year — but he still had Beliebers to rally. “Looks like we get to stay the underdog a little longer #BRINGIT,” he wrote. Small solace, but it’s something.
