TNT nabs 'Southland'

"Southland," the gritty cop drama that was unceremoniously canceled by NBC before its second season premiere, has been picked up by cable network TNT.

TNT said Monday that, beginning Jan. 12, it will air the first seven episodes of the series that aired earlier this year on NBC, followed by the six Season 2 episodes that were completed before NBC decided not to bring the show back after all.

Whether TNT will continue to produce new episodes beyond those that already exist will depend on how the show performs in the ratings.

Of the many countries participating at the Vancouver Olympics in February, add Colbert Nation to the list.

On Monday's "The Colbert Report," Stephen Colbert announced that his show had become the primary sponsor of the U.S. speed skating team. The team's largest annual cash sponsor, DSB Bank NV, left it in the lurch after declaring bankruptcy in October.

The name "Colbert Nation" -- the catchall for the legion of ardent fans of the satirical Comedy Central program -- will be emblazoned on the team's uniforms.

The late-night show isn't paying the team any money directly. Instead, Colbert is calling on his fans to donate to the team.

U.S. Speedskating Executive Director Robert Crowley, who appeared on Monday's show, acknowledged it was a "definitely unconventional arrangement," but said it would generate exposure for the sport.

The big blue and yellow circus tent that is occupying a sizable chunk of real estate adjacent to the Santa Monica Pier will be sticking around for a while longer.

Cirque du Soleil said Monday that its traveling show "Kooza" is extending its run in Santa Monica through Dec. 20. The show featuring clowns, acrobats and an impressive contraption called the Wheel of Death originally was scheduled to run through the end of November.

In January, "Kooza" will travel to the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, where it will run Jan. 8-31.

-- David Ng Leno has a few things to say

Prime-time newcomer Jay Leno says he would have rather stayed put at "The Tonight Show" -- and if NBC offered him that job again, he'd take it.

In an interview with Broadcasting & Cable magazine published online Monday, Leno hastily added that such a decision isn't his to make.

Conan O'Brien, his successor as "Tonight" host after 17 years, is "doing fine," Leno said.

"Conan is in the same position I was in when I took over. It takes a while. Some will like it; some will leave forever and not come back."

Leno said he doesn't think the recent controversy surrounding his former late-night rival David Letterman "will have a big effect at all."

Referring to Letterman's acknowledged sexual affairs with female members of his staff, Leno said, "If it were me, it would kill me. I'm the guy who's been married 29 years. But Dave has never pretended to be Mr. Moral America, he's never set himself up that way. He's not a hypocrite."

Dave Alvin, Peter Case, Stan Ridgway and other members of the Southern California roots music community will play Sunday at McCabe's in Santa Monica in a memorial concert for Austin-bred, L.A.-based musician Amy Farris, who died Sept. 29 at age 40.

A multi-instrumentalist accomplished on several instruments in the violin family, Farris had most recently been on tour as a member of Alvin's Guilty Women band. In Texas she had played alongside country veteran Ray Price as well as Kelly Willis, Alejandro Escovedo, Bruce and Charlie Robison and many others.

A donation of $10 is being requested for admission to the performance, and proceeds will go to Farris' favorite charity, Hungry for Music, which provides musical instruments to underprivileged children.
