Lena Dunham’s million-dollar book proposal and more lit links
What kind of girl is Lena Dunham? A million-dollar one, if her literary agency gets its way. According to Slate, the 26-year-old writer-director-star of HBO’s “Girls” is shopping a book deal this week, asking for $1 million (although they’ll take more). Slate has seen the book proposal and explains that it promises “a collection of frank, autobiographical essays about sex, friendship, work, eating disorders, etc.” and is tentatively titled “Not That Kind of Girl: Advice by Lena Dunham.”
The New Yorker packed up its video gear for a visit to Gay Talese in his home office. The 80-year-old, self-described suit-and-tie man calls the sprawling basement workspace his “subterranean think tank.” These days, we might call it a man cave -- a file-packed, collage-filled man cave.
The Design Observer has posted the winners of its annual 50 Books/50 Covers competition, held in concert with the AIGA national design organization and the website Designers and Books. Among the cover winners are the four-book set of retranslated works by Clarice Lispector, the British edition of David Foster Wallace’s “The Pale King,” Melville House’s “Poetry After 9/11,” Haurki Murakami’s “1Q84” and the tiny, independent, two-sided story set, “Checking In/Checking Out.”
A new pilot project for library e-books has launched with Penguin and 3M. 3M, makers of Post-it notes and hundreds of other products, has gotten into the e-book business. With Penguin, specifically, this means e-book lending with library partners. Penguin has recently pulled its e-books from other library lenders. Publishers Weekly writes, “Under the deal, patrons at the New York Public Library and the Brooklyn Public Library will now be able to check out a selection of Penguin titles via the 3M Cloud Library eBook Lending Service.” With 70 clients signed up for its service, 3M is far behind legacy provider Overdrive, which has 18,000.
