To market, to market

At the Flora Bella Farm stand, blue-black plums, knobbly red Bartlett pears, sheaves of Swiss chard and paper-skinned onions are heaped into these two-handled plaited palm baskets from Lamu Island off Kenya. Made by a farmers collective, they’re a traditional shape and weave and have a fresh, green smell. Farmer James Birch donates a portion of the sales of each to the Farmers Kitchen, a project partially funded by the USDA. The goal is to build a kitchen at the Hollywood Farmers Market where young parents and low-income people can learn to cook fresh fruits and vegetables.

Lamu market baskets, $20 large, $14 medium, $10 small. Flora Bella Farm stand, Santa Monica Farmers Market, Wednesdays and Saturdays; Hollywood Farmers Market, Sundays.
