This Sunday, wines of South Africa, braai (barbecue) and music in Hollywood

Share

This sounds like fun. On Sunday, Nov. 3, Wines of South Africa Braai Tour: Los Angeles Edition rolls into Raleigh Studios in Hollywood for an wine tasting event billed as “from BBQ to braai.” Braai (pronounced “bry”) is Afrikaans for grilling over an open fire, a tradition that goes back to the 17th century on the Western Cape.

At the outdoor afternoon affair, there will be plenty of wines from South Africa’s wine regions to taste and an array of South African noshes to sample. South African artist and musician Xander Ferreira will provide the beats.

The chef for the party is South African-born Hugo Uys (pronounced “ace”). One of the items he’ll be preparing is grilled ostrich tacos with a California-inspired spicy citrus-raisin chutney. Not so traditionally South African, California has clearly gotten to the guy.

He’s also doing Cape Malay seasoned sweet potato frites, a California salad with grilled “peri peri” shrimp in lemon-ginger-honey dressing and something called Rooster Brood, which he describes as fresh bread rolls baked on an open fire with a fig, lemon and chili jam.

At $20 for unlimited wine and food, tickets can be purchased in advance at losangelesbraai.eventbrite.com. More than 200 are already gone, so hurry.

The event benefits Minds Matter of Los Angeles.

Parking is available for $10 at 5300 Melrose Ave. (at Van Ness Ave.).
