‘Trainwreck’ trailer: Amy Schumer is a ‘modern chick,’ off the rails

The first trailer for Judd Apatow and Amy Schumer’s “Trainwreck” has arrived to turn the rom-com genre on its head.

Instead of telling the story of a fun-loving but emotionally stunted guy who can’t commit to an adult relationship, it tells the story of a fun-loving but emotionally stunted gal who can’t commit to an adult relationship.

In her own words, protagonist Amy (Schumer, who also scripted) is “just a modern chick who does what she wants.” That includes clubbing any night of the week, drinking boxed wine at the movie theater and bedding a succession of eligible bachelors. “My friends are awesome, my apartment’s sick, and I have a great job at a men’s magazine,” she says. What more could a woman want?

Maybe a date with a nice sports doctor like Aaron (Bill Hader), who’s fond of Knicks games, carriage rides and actually calling the next day. But for Amy, who’s been taught since childhood that monogamy doesn’t work, it’s all rather confusing.

Set for release July 17, “Trainwreck” looks like it could put a welcome spin on both romantic-comedy conventions and director Apatow’s typically bro-centric fare.

The Universal Pictures comedy also gets an assist from NBA player LeBron James, playing an exaggerated version of himself — one who may be a wingman of dubious skill off the court but certainly enjoys a good episode of “Downton Abbey.”
