Rory McIlroy gives caddie a $1-million bonus after winning FedEx Cup
Rory McIlory got $10.53 million richer on Sunday by winning the FedEx Cup and the Tour Championship on the same day.
His caddie, J.P. Fitzgerald, did pretty well for himself too, making a 10% cut of the golfer’s earnings for the day.
“So the total was $1.05 million,” McIlroy told reporters on Wednesday. “I think he was quite happy.”
McIlroy said Fitzgerald informed him via text message that the bonus had come through.
“I think his words were, ‘A tsunami just hit my bank account, so thank you very much,’” McIlroy said.
Back in 2014, Billy Horschel gave caddie Micah Fugitt a $1-million bonus after a FedEx Cup win.
Caddies on the PGA Tour typically receive a weekly stipend, as well as up to 10% of their golfer’s earnings for a victory. So Fitzgerald was on the highest end of that scale last weekend.
“He deserved it,” McIlroy said. “He’s a big part of what we do. He was with me when I was No. 210 in the world and when I was No. 1.”
