Brush fire near Laguna Beach is mostly contained after causing traffic jam

Share

Firefighters have mostly contained a brush fire in Laguna Canyon that had grown to about 50 acres, prompting a traffic jam and two park closures, officials said Sunday.

The fire was about 60% contained, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Tony Bommarito. Crews will continue to work to extinguish hot spots and wrangle the rest of the fire, he said.

No injuries were reported. No structures were damaged.

The blaze, which was first reported at 12:57 p.m. Sunday at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, prompted officials to close Laguna Canyon Road between El Toro Road and Canyon Acres. The fire was burning in an open space east of the city of Laguna Beach. Laguna Coast and Aliso and Wood Canyons wilderness parks have been closed.

The parks will remain closed Monday, Bommarito said. Northbound traffic on Laguna Canyon Road reopened Sunday evening, but the southbound lanes remained closed.

The fire authority said it brought in water-dropping aircraft and more than 120 firefighters battled the blaze.

Firefighters have received some assistance from the weather. The marine layer coming off the coast blocked out the sun and slowed the fire, Bommarito said.
