Two Anaheim police officers fatally shot a man who charged at them with a chef’s knife, authorities said.

About 2:40 p.m. Monday, a police officer had made a traffic stop in the 300 block of West La Palma Avenue when a man who was not involved came toward the officer, Police Department Lt. Eric Trapp said.

The man, described as in his 30s, brandished a large kitchen knife and rushed toward the officer, Trapp said. A second officer who arrived at the scene “was also charged at by” the man, Trapp said.

At some point, both officers fired their guns. Police did not disclose how many times the officers fired or how many bullets struck the man.

The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, Trapp said. His name was not released.

The shooting will be investigated by the Orange County district attorney’s office, which is customary in all police shootings. Anaheim police will also conduct a separate investigation.
