Two people were killed when a single-engine plane clipped a home and hit three cars as it crashed into a residential Santee driveway Thursday morning, authorities said.

A Federal Aviation Administration official said the Piper Cherokee crashed for an unknown reason about 9:15 a.m. about a mile from Gillespie Field, in east San Diego County. Santee Fire Division Chief Richard Smith said two men on board were killed.

One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene and the second man died at the hospital. Both appeared to have died from injuries sustained in the crash, Smith said.

The accident sparked a small fire but a resident put it out with a garden hose before firefighters arrived, Smith said.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
