Parole, LAPD officers wounded in South L.A. gun battle
A gunman hiding in an attic opened fire on several officers conducting a search Tuesday evening, wounding a parole-probation officer and Los Angeles gang officer, law enforcement authorities told The Times.
The attacker sprayed multiple rounds inside a home in unincorporated South Los Angeles, hitting the Los Angeles Police Department officer in the face and neck and the parole officer in the leg, authorities said.
Multiple rounds were exchanged in an intense firefight during which bullets tore through the ceiling and floor, authorities said. Law enforcement sources said the officers were searching the home when the gunman opened fire.
The LAPD officer is undergoing surgery at a local hospital. The parole officer’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The gunman had not been arrested and it was unclear whether he was still in the home.
The gunfire broke out shortly before 7 p.m. in the 2200 block of East 117th Street in an area normally patrolled by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Police officers and deputies from the Sheriff’s Department were looking for the suspect.
After the shooting, authorities closed the eastbound 105 Freeway slow lane and offramp at Wilmington Boulevard, the California Highway Patrol said.
The attack followed an ambush earlier in the day in Mid-City in which a gunman opened fire on two LAPD undercover detectives. The detectives received minor wounds as officers swarmed the area and launched a manhunt for the attacker.
No arrests had been made Tuesday evening in that attack.
Law enforcement authorities said that the two shooting incidents did not appear to be related, but they stressed that the investigation into both incidents was still unfolding.
