A man who was stabbed on the Metro Red Line has died, authorities said Monday night.

The victim, who was in his 30s, was stabbed on the train Monday morning and taken to a hospital by ambulance after the train stopped at the Vermont/Santa Monica Station, authorities said.

He was pronounced dead shortly after 6:30 p.m. at County USC Medical Center, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

The attacker was believed to be between 18 and 24 years old, authorities said.

“There was a verbal exchange,” Sheriff’s Department Transit Det. Keith Schumaker said. “Then the suspect produces a weapon and lunged toward the victim with a stabbing motion.”

The brief verbal exchange was captured by a security camera on the train.

A witness told The Times she saw the altercation, which she described as “quite traumatic.”

“There was no provocation whatsoever and this kid just stabs the man in the neck,” the witness said.

After that, the train stopped and the assailant ran out the door, she said. The victim was bleeding profusely, according to the witness.
