With the May 21 runoff only two weeks away, the candidates vying to replace Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will debate Sunday at USC.

In the video above, Times political reporters Maeve Reston, Seema Mehta and James Rainey explain where the race stands now, and tell us what to expect on Sunday.

City Councilman Eric Garcetti and City Controller Wendy Greuel will square off at 5:30 p.m. in a session to be live-streamed on latimes.com and broadcast on our sister TV station, KTLA.

A corps of Times reporters and columnists will also be tweeting as they go.

Will the candidates ramp up the accusations and counter-accusations we saw earlier this week over who approved those Department of Water and Power salary rates?

Or will they explain in more detail how they would create jobs, boost revenue, avoid raising taxes and keep services like street-paving and tree-trimming from sagging?

Co-sponsored by The Times and USC’s Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics, the session will be conducted at USC’s Galen Center. Community sponsors are the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation and the Junior State of America.
