Fliers of stowaway handed out before she was arrested again at LAX

Police made fliers of a stowaway banned this week from LAX--believing she would return and make another attempt--before she was arrested again Thursday at the airport.

Marilyn Hartman, 62, was taken into custody Thursday after officers spotted her boarding a FlyAway bus at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles at 10:20 a.m. and then getting off at LAX, airport police Chief Patrick Gannon said.

Gannon said he believed she would return, and in fact, she did, possibly on a scouting mission. The fliers with her photograph on them had been distributed to airport police and staff, he said.

“It’s a big deal when anyone tries to avoid security, be it a 62-year-old grandmother or a 24-year-old terrorist,” he told The Times.

After getting off the bus, Hartman entered Terminal 2 and wandered for an hour through three different terminals.

But Gannon told The Times that Hartman had no intention of purchasing a ticket, even though she had enough money to do so.

“Not in my backyard she’s getting on a plane without a ticket,” Gannon told The Times.

She was eventually arrested and later transferred to the LAPD’s Pacific Division, where she was being held for violating probation.

She was ordered Wednesday to serve 24 months probation after pleading no contest and promising to not return to the airport without a valid ticket.

Hartman made headlines earlier this week when she bypassed two boarding pass checkpoints at Mineta San Jose International Airport and boarded a Southwest flight to L.A.

Airport police arrested Hartman on suspicion of trespassing after they discovered she deboarded the plane at LAX without a ticket.

She later said what she did was “stupid” and that she planned to take a bus back to the Bay Area.

It was unclear what charges Hartman could face, but Frank Mateljan, Los Angeles city attorney spokesman, said officials plan to review the police report while she is in custody.

Hartman is already banned from San Francisco International Airport after allegedly attempting to board planes there multiple times without a ticket.

“She is clever and she is very persistent. … She is fixated on flying,” Gannon said.
