Vandals slash tires on luxury cars, SUVs in Glendale

A series of tire slashings on luxury cars and SUVs early Saturday in northwest Glendale was a “random act” of vandalism, according to police.

In some cases, all four tires were slashed on the high-end cars, most of which were parked in home driveways and on the dimly lighted streets of Vista Drive, West Mountain Street, Grandview and Winchester avenues, and Cumberland and Kenneth roads, according to Glendale police.

One of the cars, a Cadillac CTS, belonged to City Manager Scott Ochoa and had all of its tires slashed. It was one of three vandalized cars, including a 2011 Mercedes-Benz C300 and 2012 BMW 528, on Vista Drive.

“While we would not want anyone to have to worry about their vehicle being vandalized, take precautions to leave [it] in well-lit areas, have motion lights installed in driveways or park in your garage,” Sgt. Tom Lorenz said. “Most importantly, watch out for each other, call in anything suspicious.”

Other vandalized vehicles included two Lexuses, two Audis, a Mercedes-Benz SL350 and a Porsche Cayenne, police said.

The vandals appeared to have used a box cutter or pick to dig into the sidewalls of the tires, Lorenz said.

The damage, he said, was intentional because someone had to know that with punctured sidewalls, the tires could not be fixed.

Witnesses reported seeing a man in dark clothing in a dark, smaller SUV in the area, Lorenz said. A man “acting suspiciously” was also seen near one of the vandalized vehicles, police said.

For some vehicle owners, the cost to replace one tire could run at least $400.
