Neighborhood mourns 6-year-old killed while walking to school
A 6-year-old boy who was killed while walking to school with his grandmother and a sister was being mourned in his Santa Ana neighborhood where he was remembered as a happy, upbeat child.
Alan Martinez was in an unmarked crosswalk when he was struck Monday morning at the intersection of Ramona Drive and Central Avenue in a residential neighborhood. He was rushed to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he died, Santa Ana police said.
The child’s grandmother was also hit and remains in critical condition with head trauma and broken bones, police said. The boy’s sister, Mia, was not injured.
“Baby Alan, always happy, always dancing,” his mother Oralia Silva said at the scene, where she clutched the boy’s photo as she wept.
The driver, a 17-year-old who was taking his 13-year-old brother to school before heading to class at Segerstrom High School, was not cited, though the investigation is ongoing, police said.
“I don’t know if he didn’t see them or was unaware they were on the street,” Bertagna said. “One witness who was behind him said he stopped at the stop sign.”
The driver, who had a provisional license, stopped at the scene and cooperated with police, authorities said.
