Temperatures dipped into the 40s or lower across much of the Northeast on Wednesday as a nor’easter spread rain and gusty wind, continuing a gloomy spring.

Winds reaching 53 mph near Boston knocked out power to thousands of residents. Areas along the coast experienced minor flooding, the National Weather Service said.

Strong gusts were expected to continue this morning at the same time as high tide, a combination that could create potentially dangerous waves.

Temperatures fell to 42 degrees Wednesday morning at Boston and 48 at New York, the weather service said. In northern Maine, Caribou chilled to 35, in sharp contrast with the low of 53 at famously cold International Falls, Minn.

This has been the third-coldest May on record in New England, National Weather Service meteorologist Frank Nocera said.

The normal average for May in Boston is 58.5 degrees but this month’s average has been 51.4, he said.

The weather service said the storm system brought just over an inch of rain to Massachusetts, and more was expected overnight.
