First human West Nile virus case is confirmed
The county’s first human case of West Nile virus this year has been confirmed, public health officials said Wednesday.
A 36-year-old in the Riverside area is recovering at home after being hospitalized, according to Riverside County’s Department of Public Health. Last year, the county had four human cases of West Nile Virus, including one death, officials said.
West Nile virus is carried by birds. Mosquitoes that feed on an infected bird can transmit the virus to humans and animals through a bite. Although most people who are infected do not experience symptoms, health officials encourage residents to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
