Readers React: Where to swim, where to fish?

To the editor: Two potential rules should allow swimmers and pier fishermen to share the ocean. (“Shark bite puts fishing rules in question,” July 13)

First, pass a regulation that bans swimming within 200 feet of a pier. Swimmers have miles of beach to swim that are not next to a pier.

Second, limit pier fishermen to 20-pound test line, with periodic checks and fines by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. Pier fishermen are not likely to catch edible types of fish over 20 pounds.

To the editor: There are a few dozen municipal piers in California where I learned to fish. These are about the only places on hundreds of miles of coastline where you do not need a pricey license to teach your kids to fish.

There has been one recent shark attack related to pier fishing; the victim had minor injuries.

There are drownings every week; I see no outcry to ban swimming.
