Who should be in Edison High’s first Hall of Fame class? Deadline for nominations is April 1

Edison High School has been the home of several notable figures, such as women’s soccer hall-of-famer Joy Fawcett, former Major League Baseball standout Jeff Kent and golf club maker Don “Scotty” Cameron.

Soon, these and other Charger alumni could be immortalized by the high school.

Over the past months, former Edison athletic director Bruce Belcher and Charger football coach Dave White have spearheaded an effort to start an Edison High School Alumni Hall of Fame to honor notable graduates of the school and to provide current students with role models.

They have reached out to other graduates they have worked with and asked if they knew anyone who would be worthy of a nomination for the hall of fame.

“They don’t have to be an athlete or an entrepreneur,” Belcher said. “They can come from any facet of life.”

As with any other hall of fame, there are requirements and criteria that nominees need to meet. They all need to be graduates of Edison at least 10 years prior to their nomination and not have a criminal record. Nominees also must have shown great leadership through their careers and have contributed significantly to Edison or to society.

“It’s about what they did after they’ve left Edison,” White said. “It’s not so much that they were the best athlete, a good student or ASB president. It’s about how you’ve made a mark on the world after Edison.”

A committee of Edison alumni will determine who makes it into the prestigious group, which will be honored during a ceremony every fall, Belcher said.

Residents have until April 1 to nominate a Charger alumnus they believe is worthy of being in the hall of fame. The inaugural class will consist of about 10 people, and up to three inductees will be immortalized every year after that, Belcher said.

“We want it to be exclusive,” he said. “We don’t want it to be an AYSO kind of thing where everybody gets an award. This is something that’s very special.”
