USC jumps to No. 1 in AP football poll

Dominating victory over Virginia was enough to put the Trojans ahead of Georgia and Ohio State, who played lesser opponents. Trojans are also No. 1 in the coaches’ poll.

Virginia did not present much of a challenge, but USC’s dismantling of a BCS conference member in a road opener apparently impressed.

USC vaulted from third to first in the Associated Press media poll and from second to first in the coaches’ poll today, after the Trojans’ 52-7 victory at Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday.

Georgia and Ohio State are second and third in the AP poll. USC received 21 first-place votes and 1,539 points from the 65-member media panel. Georgia had 20 first-place votes and 1,506 points. Ohio State got 15 first-place votes and 1,497 points.

USC is No. 1 in both polls for first time since the week of Sept. 23 last year. The Trojans then won at Washington, 27-24, but fell to No. 2 in AP poll.

USC, which has an open date this week, plays Ohio State on Sept. 13 at the Coliseum. The Buckeyes play Ohio on Saturday.

Georgia and Ohio State might have suffered in the polls from playing schools that were previously classified as I-AA.

Georgia defeated Georgia Southern, 45-21, and Ohio State routed Youngstown State, 43-0.

UCLA, a 27-24 overtime winner over previously No. 18 Tennessee, is 23rd in the AP poll, 26th in the coaches’ poll.
