Girls’ basketball: For the second time, Judi Edwards comes out of retirement to take over at Fairfax

The basketball gods are not letting Judi Edwards retire from coaching.
For the second consecutive season, Edwards has come out of retirement to take over coaching at her old position, Fairfax High. Corey Thomas resigned on Sunday and Edwards coached on Monday.
Last season, Edwards, the school’s athletic director, hired Thomas to replace her but then had to take over when Thomas couldn’t coach the Lions because of City Section rules regarding players who had transferred.
Friends are joking she has become the Pat Riley of City Section coaching.
“This is the grand finale tour,” she said Tuesday night. “I’m going on record I’m never coaching basketball after this season.”
Fairfax is 13-5 and considered a prime challenger to City Section favorite Palisades in girls’ basketball. The Lions lost by only seven points in a first meeting. They play Palisades again on Feb. 6.
The feisty Edwards said, “We’re going to get them next time.”
