Pitching staff takes more hits

Randy Wolf wasn’t the only Dodgers pitcher facing uncertainty because of health problems Wednesday.

On the same day that Wolf was moved to the 15-day disabled list because of shoulder trouble, reliever Joe Beimel was at Centinela Hospital Medical Center to be examined for heart palpitations and Hong-Chih Kuo’s demotion to triple-A Las Vegas was voided so he could also be placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Saturday.

Taking Wolf’s place on the Dodgers’ roster was left-hander Eric Stults, who was recalled from Las Vegas.

Trainer Stan Conte said he didn’t expect anything serious to be found when Wolf undergoes an MRI today, stating that the problem with his shoulder “seems like an impingement.” “There was a lot of discussion of whether or not we should even put him on the disabled list, so that should tell you that we don’t think it’s severe,” Conte said.

Conte said he noticed something was wrong with Wolf when he made his start Tuesday night because “he didn’t look right throwing and his velocity was three to four miles down on his fastball.” The Dodgers pinch-hit for Wolf in the third inning at Conte’s urging.

Wolf, who said his shoulder has been bothering him for a month, guessed his problems could be related to the fact that he has pitched more than 100 innings for the first time since 2004. Wolf was sidelined for most of the last two seasons with elbow problems.

Manager Grady Little said he was still undecided who would take Wolf’s spot in the rotation Sunday against Florida and that he probably wouldn’t decide until Saturday. Little named Stults, D.J. Houlton and Brett Tomko as possibilities.

“It’ll have a lot to do with how we work the pitchers going into Sunday’s game,” Little said.

Wolf will be eligible to be activated July 19.

Beimel spent Tuesday night in the hospital because of heart palpitations he experienced during batting practice that day. He was examined, but the cause of his abnormal heartbeat wasn’t discovered. He was still in the hospital Wednesday and a team spokesman said in the afternoon that he could spend a second night there.

Little said that Beimel could be ready to pitch today.

Kuo was in the Dodgers’ clubhouse Wednesday, his presence due to irritation in his throwing elbow.

Kuo revealed his problem upon losing his third start in a row Friday, after which he was optioned to triple A. The left-hander underwent an MRI exam Monday that didn’t reveal any ligament damage. Conte said Kuo would get seven to 10 days’ rest and start an easy-throwing program.

Stults was recalled last September and pitched in six games, including two starts. He was 1-0 with a 5.60 earned-run average.

Stults, 27, was 5-5 with a 7.11 ERA in triple A this season, but Houlton, his teammate in Las Vegas, warned that the numbers were misleading.

Stults was 4-0 with a 3.35 ERA on the road and Houlton said that Stults’ cumulative statistics were unsightly largely because of Las Vegas’ hitter-friendly ballpark.

“More than anything it’s a mental thing,” Stults said of pitching in Las Vegas. “I had four starts that were four of the worst starts of my careers. But my last two starts at home, I went deeper into the games.”
