Gus Johnson of CBS is in talks to move to Fox
Gus Johnson, a veteran play-by-play announcer most famous for his passionate calls of March Madness college basketball games on CBS, may soon have another job.
Two people familiar with the negotiations but not authorized to speak publicly said Johnson and CBS have so far been unable to agree on a new contract and that he now is in discussions with Fox. One of the people said Johnson is discussing “a significant role” in Fox’s college football coverage, which has recently been expanded with the Pac-12 and Big 12.
On Wednesday, Fox and ESPN announced a new 12-year contract with the soon-to-be Pac-12. It includes an expanded number of football games and carries the expectation that the Pac-12 will have its own network similar to what the Big Ten has.
Johnson has worked extensively calling the games for the Big Ten network. He also was mentioned as a candidate for the NFL Network job that went to ESPN’s Brad Nessler on Thursday.
Besides his college basketball work for CBS, Johnson has also done play-by-play on NFL games for the network since 1998.
Johnson also did college football and boxing for CBS and he was part of the network’s 1998 Winter Olympics coverage.
