The timetable for Kobe Bryant’s return from an Achilles’ tear is unclear, but he’s already begun to increase his activity.

“I’m starting to move a little bit more,” said Bryant earlier in the week. “I’m trying to pick up my pace a lot more.”

In addition to healing, Bryant said he needs to get into shape. On Friday, he gave a status update via Twitter.

During his time off while recuperating from April surgery, Bryant said he did not keep his usual diet.

“Six months of eating whatever the hell I wanted to eat and not running and stuff like that caught up to me a little bit,” he said on Wednesday. “I can do it in about three weeks of rigorous conditioning. I have the green light now to do that.”

Of course he’ll have to take a break, for at least 13 hours, as the team flies to China. After the long flight, the team will play two exhibition games against the Golden State Warriors (in Beijing and Shanghai).

Bryant will be a spectator, albeit a popular one.

Given the regular season starts on Oct. 29, it appears Bryant will start the regular season in street clothes.

How far he is from a return still isn’t clear, but if Bryant lost five pounds in a single day, it’s getting closer.
