Joey Harrington signed with the New Orleans Saints to become their No. 3 quarterback behind Drew Brees and Mark Brunell.

Harrington participated in his first practice with the team Friday, a day before the Saints were scheduled to leave for Sunday’s game against the Broncos at Denver.

Harrington has spent six seasons in the NFL since being drafted third overall by the Detroit Lions in 2002. He played for the Miami Dolphins in 2006 and for the Atlanta Falcons last season.

He appeared in 12 games for the Falcons, completing nearly 62% of his passes for 2,215 yards, seven touchdowns and eight interceptions.

“I’ve obviously had a few bumps along the way,” Harrington said. “Some mistakes I made and some I couldn’t control. They’ve all been learning situations. I think here it gives me the chance to learn from somebody who’s done it well in Drew the last four or five years.”

Running back LaDainian Tomlinson returned to practice in a limited role and is listed as questionable for the San Diego Chargers’ game against the New York Jets on Monday night.

Tomlinson, who jammed his right big toe in the season-opening loss to the Carolina Panthers, sat out practice the previous two days.

He aggravated the toe in the second quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos. Darren Sproles started the second half, though Tomlinson did have a limited role during the final two quarters.

The Chargers also listed left tackle Marcus McNeill as questionable because of a neck injury.

Running back Adrian Peterson returned to practice with the Minnesota Vikings, but he was limited in his work and remained questionable for Sunday’s game against Carolina because of a hamstring injury.

Coach Brad Childress said he would wait until shortly before the game to decide whether Peterson, who leads the NFL with 263 rushing yards, would play.

If Peterson can’t go, Chester Taylor -- a 1,200-yard rusher in 2006 -- will take his place.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards was limited in practice and listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Edwards, who has had a rough start to the season with five dropped passes for the 0-2 Browns, is dealing with an injured shoulder.

It appears the Browns will also be without guard Eric Steinbach, who strained his shoulder in last Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and linebacker Willie McGinest (hamstring).

Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Jerry Porter probably will sit out a third consecutive game Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts because of a hamstring injury. . . . Two-time Pro Bowl guard Shawn Andrews is doubtful for the Philadelphia Eagles’ game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday because of back spasms.
