Floyd shows a scary movie

Tim Floyd subjected his team to a three-minute horror film Tuesday, starring Bryce Taylor, Tajuan Porter and Aaron Brooks. Call it “Rain Men.”

The USC coach wanted his players to understand what had gone wrong defensively during the Trojans’ 81-57 loss to Oregon in the Pacific 10 Conference title game so that they wouldn’t repeat it Friday during their NCAA tournament East Regional first-round game against Arkansas in Spokane, Wash.

“It was three minutes of quick shots, long shots, long rebounds, run-outs and no commitment to defensive transition,” said Floyd, who had initially said he wouldn’t make his team watch footage of the blowout loss. “Those plays actually took about six seconds [each], so there were several of them. They just needed to sit there and look at it, and they practiced like it bothered them, so that was good.”

Floyd said he was attempting to make arrangements for Paulette Francis, the mother of slain guard Ryan Francis, to attend Friday’s game as a guest of the Trojans.

“She said she would be there unless it was Buffalo, so I’m going to try to hold her to it,” Floyd said.

Floyd said Don Haskins, his former boss at Texas El Paso, probably could not attend the game because he wasn’t feeling well.

“He has a hard time negotiating airports right now at his age,” Floyd said of Haskins, who turns 77 today.

Arkansas Coach Stan Heath said junior forward Charles Thomas, who suffered a sprained ankle early in the Razorbacks’ Southeastern Conference tournament championship game loss to Florida on Sunday, was day-to-day but that “he needs to make some recovery.”

“We need to see him on the floor by Thursday” for him to play against USC, Heath said.
