Loyola Marymount will announce today the hiring of Bill Bayno as men’s basketball coach, The Times has learned.

Bayno is an assistant with the Portland Trail Blazers and coached at Nevada Las Vegas from 1995 to 2000, leading the Runnin’ Rebels to a 95-65 record and two appearances in the NCAA tournament.

Before coaching at UNLV, Bayno spent seven seasons as an assistant to John Calipari at Massachusetts.

Bayno was fired from UNLV during the 2000-01 season because of allegations he was involved in the illegal recruiting of Lamar Odom in 1996 and ’97.

The NCAA cleared Bayno of wrongdoing and he received a financial settlement from the school after filing a wrongful termination lawsuit. At LMU, he replaces Rodney Tention, who parted ways with the school after three seasons and a 30-61 record.
